DENTAL STUDY: Frequently Asked Questions

Dentistry is the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and/or treatment (non-surgical, surgical or related procedures) of diseases, disorders and/or conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and/or the adjacent and associated structures and their impact on the human body.

Offered in many universities for a period of four, five or six years and of which part will be spent together with students of medicine. In Obafemi Awolowo University undergraduate curriculum, it takes a minimum of six years to get a B.Ch.D (Baccalaureus Chirurgiae Dental) otherwise known as BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) for candidates admitted through UTME or five years for Direct Entry students.

100L will see you through advanced physics, chemistry, zoology, botany and social sciences and it varies slightly in different schools.

Your 200 L will be basically anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology and pharmacology. You will then write a professional examination(MB) marking the end of  200L.

The same goes for 300L and  the first professional examination(MB) that marks the end of pre-clinicals follows.

400L, the first clinical year, entails lectures and postings in the different specialties of medicine and surgery; pharmacology and all aspects of pathology including morbid anatomy, chemical pathology, haematology & immunology, microbiology & parasitology, histopathology. The second professional examination(MB) then comes in. All these academic sessions will be spent together with students of medicine.

In 500 and 600 levels dental students will be taught and undergo postings in oral radiology, oral pathology, oral & maxillofacial surgery, restorative dentistry, paediatric dentistry, preventive & community dentistry, dental therapeutics, endodontics, oral medicine. A third professional examination is then written and an induction into Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria(MDCN) caps the learning process.

Each school has criteria to advance to the next class and asides 100L, results are given as distinction, pass, repeat the year or an advise to withdraw.

The degree awarded on completion of dental training is Bachelor of Dental Surgery which confers the title of a ‘Dr.” to the holder. Dentists are Drs.

Specializations require to pass examination at National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria or West African College of Surgeons and then proceed to a teaching hospital where they offer any of the postgraduate programs in paediatric dentistry, endodontics, oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, prosthodontics, preventive dentistry, dental public health/community dentistry, oral pathology, periodontology, oral radiology, orthodontics, forensic dentistry and special needs dentistry.

Yes! Dentistry was the very first speciality of medicine. Training as a dental or medical student can be fun and challenging at the same time! And there is little to no reason to compare the two!
